Molly Butterfly
Molly and I began fire dancing together in 2003, just a while after I had moved to Sacramento from being a traveler for some time. We met through a local fire group, Sactown Pyros, however it wasn’t until our connection at the Horse Cow that our relationship truly began to blossom.
During these times we were both new at fire dancing and had wildly creative ideas to express. We had no idea what direction anything was going or even the possibilities that lay ahead. We simply chose to follow our hearts, dance, play, create, explore, have fun, and remain open. Building these shows and having a place to share and practice these creations was an extremely joyful process to experience.
Though these shows did not always go over smoothly, they were tremendous learning experiences that gave us a place to keep refining our creative skills and building our relationship. Reflecting 8 years later, we still deeply enjoy getting together to put together fire shows regardless of how successful our shows are, it’s the process that our spirits enjoy. The shows we present are a celebration of the completion of a creative and collaborative process. We value our special dance connection and have spent many years cultivating this relationship.
Today, while Molly and I were working on the Fire Spectacular, I had to take a moment to share with her how grateful I am for this connection. Whether we are fire dancing, or getting together to make costumes, or working on a musical set, or simply running into each other in everyday life wearing the same color scheme, I feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful dance partner, friend, and co creator.
From the beginning, Molly has had a captivating fire dance style. I have truly enjoyed watching her graceful and beautiful fire dance evolve. She radiates confidence and beauty in her dance that I have found inspiring from the very first time I saw her spin fire poi. She has helped me gain confidence in myself as a performer and is a delightful joy to dance with.
Molly has helped grow Obsidian Butterfly through the years. Even at times with just one arm. She brings truly unique and innovative creative ideas to the Sacramento fire dancing seen and I am eternally grateful for her continued support, creative input, and friendship. I have learned from her over the years and I appreciate her wise and creative contributions.
Molly enjoys her Poi and Fans the most. She hopes to evolve into Staff and Doubles. She also paints, makes amazing wire wrapped jewelery which she can be seen wearing sometimes at shows. She also makes the Fire Snakes that you see Obsidian Butterfly dancing with.
You may catch Molly’s next fire performance at the FurrBall 2011. Times of performance will be announced on the Obsidian Butterfly events page once that information becomes available. Please be sure to share your appreciation for her captivating fire dance next time you see her.
